Essex-based employment and skills specialist Seetec has kicked off a programme that will see talented young people recruited to Southend United’s new Facilities Management Academy.
The Roots Hall-based club has embarked on a partnership with Seetec to recruit a regular intake of 16-18 year old trainees who will learn all about managing the 12,392-seater stadium and its corporate hospitality buildings.
Clare Boston, Regional Delivery Director at Seetec, the specialist employment and skills organisation that operates across the UK and Ireland, said: “It is great news that Southend United has given this commitment to young people and we are really looking forward to working both with the club and the young people this academy will attract.
“There will be so many people who want to know what goes on behind the scenes of a Football League One club, now they can and these will be great transferrable skills.
“Trainees will undertake 100 hours’ placement, working alongside the facilities management team to learn how to maintain the famous Roots Hall stadium as well as some classroom-based learning.
“We are so excited about this new opportunity for young people in the area, Seetec has been established in Hockley near Southend for more than 30 years and we know the importance of giving young people the opportunity to learn new skills with great local employers like Southend United Football club to fulfil their true potential. ”
Danny Macklin, Commercial Director from Southend United, said: “It’s a great way to enhance your CV, expand your horizons and improve your maths and English.
“The Club is seeking motivated individuals looking to gain experience in stadium maintenance, installation and maintenance of seating, signage and advertisement boards and assisting in general preparation of the facilities ahead of match days and non-match day events.”
The trainee programme is co-funded by the Skills Funding Agency and comes at a time when the National Office for Statistics released results that UK unemployment has fallen to a new 11-year low of 1.6 million.
But Clare Boston warned: “While this is a time for celebration, employers need to invest now in the future of the next generation workforce, to build the skills gap and prepare for any uncertainty of the Brexit vote.”
